This afternoon, there were a lot of cooks in the kitchen. More than what was needed. First it was Kay then Ace at some point. Then came Tembi, who, as the Head of House, offered a helping hand.
The meal was missing something starchy and Kay suggested Tembi cook some pap, a traditional African stiff porridge that accompanied most meals. Tembi knew very little about but was willing to give a bash, and a bash she gave.
Pap, like any other dish, required a certain level of skin. As simple a meal as it is, one little mistake ruined the whole thing. There was usually no turning back after that. This is exactly what happened to Tembi. They all tried to save the meal but it was over before it even began.
It’s all very hilarious when it happens to someone else but we’re all guilty of this particular mistake. For those of us, like Tembi, who don’t quite know A from B here, here is a quick run-down of how to prepare pap.
Ingredients
- Maize meal
- Salt
- Water
- Wooden spoon
- Recipe
Bring water in a pot to a boil
Add salt
Stir in the maize meal
Let it simmer and stir at intervals of 10-15 minutes until solid
Tembi took it in all in her stride, threw disastrous pot of food out and made a light potato salad in its place. Crises averted. Bon appetite
